Kiwi Can

Kiwi Can
What we learnt - Respect for our Community and Respect.

Today after interval room 7 went to kiwi can for 40 minutes. In the 40 minutes we first did a recap on what our Theme for the term was and our Topic for the week. At the point while we were talking most of us, Our brain were still sleeping and so we needed an Energizer called Rubbish bin relay to warm our us up and to also wake our brains up. After play the energizer we talked more about our topic and our theme. Next, we played an Activity called 1,2,3 and how it works was we had to find a partner and one says 1 and the other says 2 and so on but we were only given 3 numbers and it sure was a challenge. Lastly, We did a General knowledge quiz to see how much we understand general thing that have occurred around us.
Today I had fun learning about Respect and Respect for our School.

Reading Activity - Create Activity

For Reading this week My reading group and I have been learning about plants and about the lightest wood in the world! In the journal we learnt different type of ways you can make things out of Pine trees and Whau trees. The Book was written by Jill MacGregor who loves going around the pacific islands and writing little, small and simple story for young students. This is my create activity from what I have learnt about the Whau tree.

Activity 1.
Write a response/email to Jill MacGregor about you
opinion from the text you read.

Dear Jill MacGregor

Hi Jill MacGregor, Your book about the lightest wood in the world,(the Whau tree)
is a really interesting text. It had lots of information about the Whau and Pine tree.
Also there are a few questions about why you wrote this particular
text instead of writing about another tree. Some of my questions are
Why did you write this text?
What was the purpose behind this text?
Did you have to do much research about the tree?
Who are the character in the text?
All of these questions are just to help get why you wrote the text.
Well apart from that Your text is a very nice and simple text
for young kids/students but it also does have lots of information
for older kids/teenagers/students.

Activity 2!

Kiwican

Kiwi Can!
Today we had Kiwi Can after Interval. We learnt about Perseverance and Resilience, We learnt the meaning of these two words. So the word Perseverance means Keep on trying until you succeed and the word Resilience means Giving things a try and Never giving up. We had a chat about the Perseverance because still most us didn't understand what the words meaning was. After we talked about it we got straight into our Energiser and we played Ball tag. After the energiser we had another talk about the two words again. 10 minutes later we played another game called Pictionary. How this game is played is we had to get into 4 equal groups and everyone got to go up and draw something on the white board to give the class a clue on what the drawing meant.

Kiwican was pretty fun today!

Gymnastics

Gymnastics

Unfortunately Today was our last day of Gymnastics. We had 2 different coaches, one was only for the first 2 weeks named Kane and the other was for 4 weeks and his name was Ethan. In the 6 weeks we had we learnt different type of basic gymnastic moves. We learnt how to so a forward roll, a handstand, a cartwheel, a bunny hop and a back roll. Today was a testing challenge. The points were between 1 and 3. 1 was low and 3 was high. First we had to warm up before we could get started. The first thing we did was run and jump. Most of us scored a 1 and only two scored 2. Next we did a handstand, then a cartwheel, then a forward roll and finally we did a depth jump. Most of us scored 1 and 2 between all of then and only a few could make it a 3.

The good News was that 2 student made it to 10 and that was Mary and I, and next was Trent and Pelenise they scored 9. In our gymnastic session I learnt lot of gymnastic basic moves. I was so happy with the results that I got at the end and it all depended on my concentration and the flexibility that I had. In my Gymnastic I got a Silver band which isn't bad at all, To me all I need to work on is Doing more stretches and than I can improve my flexibility more.

Glow in the Dark?

                                            Glow in the dark!

Glow in the dark is one thing that kids love to play with during night time because of the glow that it has that turns a kids room into a magical room. Glow in the dark was first discovered in 1669 by a German scientist named Hennig Brand.
P.1 What is Glow in the dark? Glow in the dark have lots of chemicals inside it such as phosphorescence, phosphors and so much more. The chemicals inside glow in the dark things such as toys, light bulbs, glow sticks and so much more are have very dangerous chemicals inside. Not only that it is dangerous but it has a long lasting glow.

P.2 How are glow in the dark things made? Glow in the dark are made with different type of mixed chemicals to help give it a nice, bright, shining glow. A chemical called “Phosphors” help radiate the visible light after being energized. Which mean the item/object has to be exposed before using the item/object otherwise it won’t glow.

The science : Glow in the dark includes lot of chemicals with weird names. But the main one is called Phosphors.

Glow in the dark - Information Report!

Introduction - Glow in the dark. Glow in the dark is one thing that kids love to play with during night time because of the glowieness that it has that turns a kids room into a magical room.

P.1 What is Glow in the dark? Glow in the dark have lots of chemicals inside it such as fluorescence, phosphorescence and so much more. The chemicals inside glow in the dark things such as toys, light bulbs, glow sticks and so much more are have very dangerous chemicals inside. Not only that it has dangerous it has a long lasting glow.

P.2 How are glow in the dark things made? Glow in the things are made with different type of mixed chemicals to help give it a nice, bright, shining glow. A chemical called “Phosphors” help radiate the visible light after being energized. Which mean the item/object has to be exposed before using it otherwise the item/object won’t have a glow.

P.3 Why do glow in the dark things exist? There is only one way to find out and that is by asking a scientist that question but some of us might predict that it’s because of the special substance called “Phosphors” and that’s right. The special substance called “Phosphors” help to make glow in the dark things exist so that kids can enjoy playing with them during night time just to turn their ordinary room into a magical one.

P.4 Why do kids love to use/play with them? Children under the age of 7 may think that glowing toys have magic but they are still learning and soon they will understand what is really inside the glowing toys and what helps it glow. Kids love playing with glowing toys because the toys glow which makes it much more fun to watch glow all night long. But there’s not only toys that kids love to see glow there’s so much more things such as watches, earrings, eyes and so much more.

Conclusion - Glow in the dark things are really awesome and fun things to help you get rid of stress. If you have stress a lot in your everyday life, maybe if you buy glow in the dark toys or anything that glows maybe if can help get rid of your stress like more than 12,000 people in our country.

Science intensive

Today for Science intensive Room 7 learnt about Makeup. Not the make up only girls or women wear everyday but makeup that both men and women, boys and girls wear in T.V shows, movies, films and music videos. The type of makeup we learnt about was how it can change your facial features and how it can change your skin colour under a bright light. For stage makeup it is important that the makeup is not only a lot thicker than normal, but a lot more pigmented.

One Fact! - Makeup is made in laboratories using specialised equipment and ingredients. They follow directions just like a recipe in a cookbook!

The house it haunted....!

The birds were chirping with the morning sun shining in my eyes, as well as the day we had to move out of our own house. My vision was bad and blurry but I still had to get up because mum was shouting across the house saying “Get up and pack your bags kids”. My brother David was wondering what was the whole commotion about so he yelled out “ Hey mum, Why do we have to pack our stuff and by the way, it’s only 6:00 am”. Mum said back to David “Just do as you're told and I know its a bit early but please do as I say”. David replied in a really lazy voice “ Fine”.

I didn’t mind what was happening at all because I already knew what was going to happen and I was excited but I wasn’t happy about having to leave school forever in my old town. I still had to put up with it and as I was packing I found a picture of my friends and me at my 10th birthday, My eyes filled with tears and started to drop every time I blink. I couldn’t hold in my emotions but then Mum said: “Are you ready Katie”. I replied, “Yes Mum, and Why don’t you check with David I think he might like a lending hand with packing”. Mum said, “David is all done, we’re just waiting for you now sweetie”. I hid the image inside my suitcase, zipped it up and rushed down the stairs like an elephant. Mum took my suitcase and placed it in the boot beside David’s suitcase. I sat in the car, buckled my seat belt and looked outside of my window and crying while mum placed a sign outside that said: “For Sale”.

We drove for over 3 hours and just 2 more to go but David wasn’t feeling really well he said to mum “ Mum, Can you stop the car I feel like I’m going to vomit”. Mum immediately stopped the car and that’s when David vomited. I was feeling disgusted. After 15 minutes mum hoped back into the car and started to drive again. After 2 hours we got there and Mum said “Guys I know its a bit dusty but this is all I can afford if that’s fine with you both”. David and I both cried “Of course mum It’s totally okay”.

It was Monday morning which was 72 hours (3 days) after getting everything done and the house looked just like our old house. David's room was upstairs and so was mine. But mum was downstairs all by herself.  That night at 6:00 pm I went into my room to find my headphones but it was in my draws. I pulled my draws open and but when I opened my top draw there was a weird mystery box. I opened it up and had a look inside and this weird light shined in my eyes and made my vision blurry. I couldn't see a thing until 5-10 minutes. I heard nothing but mum Stumping up the stairs coming up the stairs and saying "Hey Katie are you okay?". "Yes mum, I'm coming down now". And so I went down to have dinner. 20-25 minutes later I was walking up to my room again but this time I stopped halfway through the stairs because I heard something in the basement. I quietly walked down and "Flip," I yelled. And there was David, He looked at me and the box that was in my hand he said "What is that and where do you think you're going. I said, "Please don't tell mum, I found it in my draw the top one". David said, "Is it Magic". I said, "No, Silly it’s a box that I found that can light up if you open it". I showed David and he said to me "What are you going to do with it?". I cried "Tomorrow on our way to school I am going to through it into the ocean". David said" Okay, I'm you're gonna do that because I want the family to be safe.

It was time to go to school. And I hid the box in my bag and on our way I turned to the left footpath which was to the ocean and I through the box away and ran back to David, somehow he was almost 3 meters away from me. I ran as fast as I could and finally, I caught up to him and yelled: “What the hell David, Why didn’t you wait for me”. He replied, “Ohh Sorry I forgot”. We kept walking until we got to school I hugged David and said: “Have a good day”. David Replied, “You too”.  Late afternoon David and I were playing outside the house and was almost 5:00 pm. Mum yelled, “Katie and David, come inside now”. I said to David “ Last one in is in tomorrow”. It was a tie, After we had dinner I asked mum If we could sleep with her tonight and the only thing she said was “Okay”.

Mum’s bed was so comfy and mine was okay but not as comfy as mums, we slept until 8.00 am in the morning and when we woke up mum already prepared our breakfast. She made us French toast and hot chocolate. I hardly never ate because I was still worried about the mystery box I found, I wanted to see what was inside but firstly I had no time and second of all I through it away and it's properly long gone beyond the reef.  One thing I still remembered was that the box had something inside that was glowing, but I didn't actually get to see what was inside. I said to myself "Wait for a second, I think I know what it was, I think it was a magical gem or a magical amulet. Something like that". "Ughh" yelled.

10 minutes after I said "Ughh" The picture that was in mum's room started to move and the man started blinking....... I was speechless that time. David walked in and started screaming. Mum came and said "what the whole commotion about. Are you to okay?". As soon as mum started talking everything was normal.

1 years later..

It was time for us to move back because David and I told Mum what happened. It was like we were going to have a heart attack just because we spoke for too long. Finally, mum made up her mind and wanted to move back to our old house and never go back to the haunted house that we live in for a year. The only good thing about the house was that we didn't have to pay the bills. Not even a single bit.

2 months later..

It was David's birthday. He invited a few of his friends over for a feast. The cake that mum baked was so nice and yummy. It was a cheesecake topped with dark melted chocolate. After the feast, David's friend's parents came over to pick their kids up and then it was just us three. We were a quiet family. But at the end of the day, we were a team and always was.

3 months later the same thing that happened at the old haunted house that was in the middle of nowhere. We were all freaking out. But we couldn’t move of stand because this time it was the whole house that was shaking. I did nothing but yelled across the house “Is the house haunted! Did the ghost follow us here?!”.

Water pollution

What is Water Pollution? Water pollution is like water bodies, but usually caused results as humans are causing water pollution. Water pollution does just include water it contains oceans, rivers, lakes, and groundwater.

What causes water pollution? Water pollution is caused when humans start to litter and rubbish go through the drains, into all thing that containing water, such as ( the ocean, rivers, lakes, and groundwater). Water pollution doesn’t always have to do with rubbish it’s also got to do with “Gas” that come out of boats.

How can we prevent water pollution?  Water pollution can be it us human's just put our head into it and stop using things that are made out of plastic because that's how we get our oceans, rivers, lakes, and undergrounds dirty.  Also using garbage disposal is another way we pollute our lands that contain water. Things that go down the garbage disposal isn't only things like rubbish, leftover food and something else that can make our water polluted and that is "Fat oil". Fat oil is like cooking oil but we call it "Fat oil" Because it contains lot's and lot's of fat in it. This is just like gas but slightly different.

How long have we had water pollution for on earth? Water pollution started 11,000 years ago, which is a long time ago and it's still happening now. When will it ever stop? By 2050 water will run out because of water pollution. Were making the water dirty and hard for people to clean it up for us. So somehow we are going to try to make it clean but no one knows how to because a lot of water to clean, Wow, that’s a lot to clean.

Can we live with water pollution? Sometimes, But not all the time because water pollution can have diseases that contain chemicals and thing that can harm our body and skin.

Water pollution is something that can cause death and isn’t a good thing because over 2,134,220 people have died because of water pollution. So for human that want to live longer maybe try to keep the ocean, river, lakes and groundwaters clean.

Once in a lifetime poem!

Once in a lifetime

No perfect love comes without a price
No great loving story comes easy
But for those who fight to be together
The universe will laugh and blush at you
Don’t mind what others think about you
Think about who matters to you
Once you have found your lifetimer
That’s when you’ll find life isn’t easy anymore
Having a lifetime is the best thing
Just breathe and have faith in who you are
And that’s when everything will work out the way it’s supposed to be
Life may be fast
But not you
You can live forever, die together and hold each other
Until your very last moment
Than you can let each other go
But in heart you never do!

Friendship poem!

       Friendship

Our friendships is strong
Our friendships is unique
The bond that we have is like a locked door
None of us can open the door unless someone backs out
But still our friendship would never  let each other down
We fall together
We suffer together
We get in trouble together
But still our friendship is unbreakable
We laugh, we love, we learn and we live.
Our friendship like two beautiful hearts
That keeps our  feelings growing everyday
Friends have roots an2d leaves just like trees
Once they’re all gone there’s nothing  left to see
Friends always go running back to each other
And say
“I WANT TO BE CLOSE TO YOU AGAIN AND THIS TIME
I’LL NEVER LET YOU DOWN!”

Saturn

This is one of the piece of work my group and I worked on. We chose the planet Saturn because of it's beautiful ring around it and what it is made out of.

Two fun facts about Saturn: No#1 - Did you know that Saturn has only been visited 4 times by spacecrafts. No#2 - Did you know that Saturn is the least dense planet in our solar system.

Toitoi Visit

                                                    Toitoi Visit

Today Charlotte the owner of  Toitoi books brought 6 volunteers with her from PWC to Glenbrae School and read with students from room 7. Each volunteer had 3-4 students in their group. Newsam, Winnie, Dekorah and I were with Jess. We read 9-10 stories/poems from issue 11. The stories were very interesting and fun to read. I liked the story "My Bridge" because it talked about how long it would take someone to walk from the top of the bridge to the end of the bridge. It was such an amazing experience getting to know Jess and also reading with her.
