Inquiry, A good/bad loser.

For Inquiry in room 7, we have been learning about Positive Relationships. (Not boyfriend and girlfriend relationships, but the relationships between both genders.) Our WALT was - Understand what a good/bad loser is. It was a very interesting genre and we needed a lot of unpacking for this particular genre.

Here is a *GOOGLE SLIDE* my friend and I created.!! - Francesca Pome'e

Room 7 Week 2 weekend activities - Maya

A snippet of Matilda by Roald Dahl
By the time she was three, Matilda had taught herself to read by studying newspapers and magazines that lay around the house. At the age of four, she could read fast and well and she naturally began hankering after books. The only book in the whole of this enlightened household was something called Easy Cooking belonging to her mother, and when she had read this from cover to cover and had learnt all the recipes by heart, she decided she wanted something more interesting.
‘Daddy,’ she said, ‘do you think you could buy me a book?’
‘A book?’ he said. ‘What d’you want a flaming book for?’
‘To read, Daddy.’
‘What’s wrong with the telly, for heaven’s sake? We’ve got a lovely telly with a twelve-inch screen and now you come asking for a book! You’re getting spoiled, my girl!’
Nearly every weekday afternoon Matilda was left alone in the house. Her brother (five years older than her) went to school. Her father went to work and her mother went out playing bingo in a town eight miles away. Mrs Wormwood was hooked on bingo and played it five afternoons a week. On the afternoon of the day when her father had refused to buy her a book, Matilda set out all by herself to walk to the public library in the village. When she arrived, she introduced herself to the librarian, Mrs Phelps. She asked if she might sit awhile and read a book. Mrs Phelps, slightly taken aback at the arrival of such a tiny girl unaccompanied by a parent, nevertheless told her she was very welcome.

Response activities
If her parents did not teach her, how did she learn to read?
Self taught
School
How did you learn to read?
School
Taught by my parents
Practiced
Could it be possible that a three year old can read? Yes/No? Explain your answer in detail. (There is no right or wrong answer here. It is your opinion).
50/50. For this particular person, Matilda, I would say Yes. Because Matilda is a very young and intelligent girl with the ability to read at such a young age. For others, I will say No. My little sister is 3 and she can’t read 😂. It’s very unusual for 1-3 year olds to be able to read, but Matilda sure does have that ability of reading at such young age and is reading more and more as she’s growing up.
How could you describe Matilda’s father to someone who has not read the book? Create a poster to draw what Matilda’s parents looks like. Make sure your posters are of great quality so they can be displayed in our literacy wall in class.
Hella (Another way of saying Hell) no way!
If you were to have a to and fro conversation with Matilda, list 5 questions you would ask her.
How were u able to read at such a young age?
Who’d u learn how to read?
How come your dad didn’t like reading?
Did u have other hobbies other than Reading?
Why did your parents leave u alone at home for? Did you have any other family members they could've left u with?
What did Matilda’s father mean by “flaming book”?
He obviously didn’t mean the flaming/burning book, ‘flaming’ is a slang used when you are depressed/angry/not in a good mood. It also means “Insult someone over something”
What word suggests that Matilda’s mother loves to play bingo?
Addicted to playing bingo
A hobby
Other home learning activities
On Monday, bring something from home which means a lot to you. Bring something you are prepared to leave at school for the all of Term 1. Please do not forget this is important for our team building.
Everything I have means a lot to me.
On the first week of school, you wrote reflections about how you felt on the first day. Please write a reflection about your second week of school and second week in Room 7. Have you been challenged in your learning? Have you built new friendships? Have you improved in your ability to focus in your learning? Have you set goals which you would like to achieve this year?
Week 2 reflection - In week two it was very fun but our homework were also very challenging but it was worth it. If I was to say, I would say that my first day/week was way better than week two only because of a few things. I have been challenged a lot in room 7 for the past two  weeks, especially with Maths. I have also build a lot of new friendships especially with boys this year. My focus ability in class on my learning has improved so much. I am now able to complete givin tasks at a certain amount of time when given. I am currently setting a few goals, step by step each and everyday, but as the year goes by… I will set bigger and long term goals.
Being a better me
In the weekend, help someone at home you do not usually help. Record a brief video about how you felt helping this person. If you can not video then write a short report about your experience.
Didn’t do so……. But I did help my sisters with music on Saturday Morning.
